The Power of Boredom (and a Rich Instinct)

One is the fuel, the other’s the GPS

I used to thrive off anger. Although desire and inspiration are wonderful motivators, they burn out quick. But anger would push me for way longer.

I’m excited to announce, though, that I just wrote and published my first book Rich Instinct: The World Is Yours if You Can Spot Its Lies.

And it all started with boredom.

See, last year I decided to take a week off for my birthday (August 2nd) so I could relax. But instead of feeling relaxed, I was bored.

To fight that boredom I decided to jokingly write down an “idea” for a book that had been floating around in my mind for a couple months. Surprisingly, the idea felt hefty and fully-formed.

“Maybe this is the book I’ve failed to start many times,” I thought to myself. And it was. Things just started flowing. Excitement kicked in.

Chapter titles and outlines started coming to me as if a future Alex was whispering them in my ear. So I kept going.

And going. And going.

My job got super-busy around October, but I found ways to wrestle away an hour here and there during weekdays. And Saturdays I’d have marathon writing sessions at six and seven hours per clip. I had energy like never before!

And all this time, only one person ever knew I was “trying” to write a book: my good friend and mentor Al Pittampalli. He’s been published through major publishers, so he understood better than anyone what it takes to finish a book. Talking to him about it kept me sane.

Fast-forward to June, and the manuscript was finished. This book started feeling real. And then this thought: “maybe I can finish all the work — idea to fully finished production — in the span of just 365 days. Maybe this year, this book can be a gift to myself.”

The race was on!

I was determined to press the “Submit” button for publishing by my birthday this year, August 2nd.

It’s been a hustle to say the least.

But I got it done. I finished the editing, designing, formatting, recording, and production — uploading everything just in time for my birthday this year, August 2nd.

Today is the release date, and it’s available in paperback, eBook, and audiobook form. On all your favorite retailers, so get your copy.

Anger and bitterness for me were always the most effective emotions at pushing me to create change in my life. Being angry at non-believers would have me getting up early and going to bed late, just to prove them wrong.

The bitterness and envy of seeing others’ dreams come true would put a battery in my back. Envy is purer than 93 octane gasoline. Vroom vroom!

But ultimately, anger and envy would also polute my inner self, and cause me to break down halfway through the journey. No bueno.

If you’re also being fueled by anger, resentment, or envy — it’s time to give it up. It’s not worth it.

Wallace Wattles wrote that desire “is simply the capacity for a larger life seeking fulfillment; every desire is the effort of an unexpressed possibility come into action.”

Although I said earlier that desire burns out quick, when desire is mixed in with a specific purpose, it can fuel you forever.

That’s what happened with me and my book Rich Instinct. Boredom pushed me to write my idea down. This idea — of bringing to light the truth about how the rich and powerful experience the world differently — now became my purpose. Then, mix that in with a desire for larger life seeking fulfillment (aka my craving to express myself in writing) and the formula is complete.

Today, I stand here supremely proud of the work I’ve done on Rich Instinct: The World Is Yours if You Can Spot Its Lies. It’s about how the rich take in the world differently than the masses do, and it gives them an edge. Since they gather better information, they’re able to make better decisions.

Yet this information is available to anyone determined to find it. And this book is the great equalizer. It’s the most important message I’ve ever put out. Everyone, young and old, should read this and internalize it.

It’s what I wish I’d learned in my twenties.

But it’s never too late to change your station in life. It’s never too late to gain influence, power, freedom, and wealth.

If you’re still reading, I think this message is something you need in your life. Check out this video trailer I made for the book and then you can decide.

Boredom can be your spark to change, but ultimately, desire and purpose are what best keep you going.
